NO-GI GRAPPLING
No-Gi Grappling is a modern and fast-paced form of submission wrestling where athletes compete without the traditional martial arts uniform known as a "gi" or kimono. Instead, they wear tight-fitting sportswear like rash guards and shorts, which prevents opponents from using clothing grips. The focus in No-Gi is on speed, body control, technique, and submissions. Since there are no collars or sleeves to hold onto, competitors rely heavily on underhooks, clinches, wrist control, and momentum. This creates a faster and more explosive style of grappling, requiring quick transitions, strong positional awareness, and solid conditioning.
No-Gi Grappling is widely practiced around the world and is one of the key disciplines in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training. It is governed internationally by United World Wrestling (UWW)
🔥 Frequently Used Techniques in No-Gi Grappling
1. Takedowns & Entries
Double Leg Takedown
A classic wrestling-style takedown where the attacker shoots in, grabs both legs, and drives through for a clean takedown.Single Leg Takedown
Involves isolating one leg and using pressure, angles, or trips to bring the opponent down.Snap Down to Front Headlock
Snapping the opponent’s head down and transitioning into control positions like the guillotine or anaconda choke.
2. Top Control Techniques
Passing the Guard (Knee Slice, Body Lock Pass)
Since there’s no cloth to hold, tight pressure and speed are key to getting past the opponent’s legs into dominant positions like side control or mount.Mount & Back Control
No-Gi emphasizes control with hooks and body triangles instead of using lapel grips. From these positions, submissions like rear-naked chokes become highly effective.
3. Submissions
Rear Naked Choke (RNC)
The king of No-Gi submissions. Executed from back control — highly effective in both sport and self-defense.Guillotine Choke
A front headlock submission used both from standing and ground positions — often chained with takedown attempts.Ankle Locks & Heel Hooks
Especially in advanced No-Gi, leg attacks are heavily used. The heel hook is a game-changer and can end a match instantly.Arm Triangle & D’Arce Choke
Head-and-arm chokes that use tight positioning and leverage rather than grips — very popular in No-Gi.
4. Escapes & Reversals
Granby Roll / Inversion
A rolling escape used to recover guard or escape bad positions.Sit-Out & Stand-Up from Bottom
These wrestling-based movements are commonly used to escape bottom positions and return to neutral.
🧠 Why These Techniques Work in No-Gi???
No-Gi focuses on tight control, speed, body mechanics, and real-time transitions since you can’t rely on grabbing fabric to slow things down. That’s why clinching, overhooks, wrist control, pressure passing, and slick submissions define the style.
